Northstar Academy

Where there are no learning disabilities. Only learning differences.

As central Virginia's only K-12 independent, not-for-profit school for children with a broad range of learning challenges, Northstar Academy has a proven track record of educating students with learning difficulties. At Northstar, students thrive. Northstar changes lives and often saves them. We help to create a world where students can experience sucess instead of feeling they are doomed to failure.

About

Northstar Academy is a small independent school for children who have a broad range of learning challenges. Founded by a group of concerned parents and professionals, it began operations in 1996 at Epiphany Lutheran Church with 14 students. Since then, Northstar Academy has grown rapidly, each year serving more students and requiring more space. The school serves approximately 100 students today and owns its facility at 8055 Shrader Road, Richmond, Virginia.

Mission and Philosophy

Northstar Academy's mission is to provide specialized instruction in a structured but nurturing environment to students of broad average ability who have difficulty learning in typical school settings and with traditional teaching methods. It is our belief that there are no learning-disabled children - only children who learn differently. We believe that all children can reach their potential when given the correct learning tools.

The school works actively toward two main goals:

> Wherever possible, we strengthen students' skills to make it possible for them to return to their home schools;

> For students who need on-going assistance, we provide a full academic curriculum through the 12th grade.
